Safe to drill into wheel wells? (Mud flaps)

Hi,

I'm planning a DIY mud flap installation. I see several people have created a bracket that in turn has been screwed or riveted to the existing aluminum strip at the back of the wheel well.

But - I could make the installation a lot more sturdy if I put a few screws through the flap into the back of the wheel well as well.

What's behind it? We have a 'twin' model so our beds are near the wheels but there's about a 6" space between the foot of the bed and the nearest interior wall.

Some new information: I will be using 2" screws that came with my flaps, 4 per side. Brand is DeWalt, from Costco.

Make sure you don't drill into the shower pan.

So if I drill toward the "back" of the wheel well I should be safe? Shower presumably is "up"

Hey! When you take a shower now it will clean your mudflap!

I really hope you're joking Those screws are located below the top of the frame. Ugh.

[I went inside the camper to look]

Good job!
From a past thread, the guy presumably used a bracket because his flaps extended outside the wheel well a bit.
So the flaps mounted on an arm and the arm mounted as yours.
I think it's wise to use mud flaps to protect the tank drain controls, as in your photo!

Yep I did the same type set up. I used the existing rivet holes to mount mine.

Your look great. Nicely done!

Curious as to what problem you are trying to solve? And whether adding the mud flaps made a difference after you have had them for awhile.
