Roof Vent Insect Screen Installation

Hello,
I have a 1960 Airstream Tradewind, and I'm trying to install the insect screens on the roof vents. How do you get screens through the roof vent hardware (cylinders operating the roof vents up and down). The screen have small holes to fit through, but are only big enough for the shaft moving up and down. There must be a way of taking the hardware appart. Do I make any sence? If needed I can post a photo tomorrow.
Thanks

Hi, The handles come off like a socket on a socket wrench. They may need some penetrating oil and some careful persuasion. Some also have small Allen head set screws.
