Repairs in Kansas City area?

Hi friends!

My hubs and I bought our first Airstream in Feb of this year (2005 22' International CCD) and we've been able to take her out a few times. We're cursed because it rains every time and we've found she leaks, this weekend we've found she leaks A LOT, right over the bed, of course. I've read everything on the forums about patching the roof and have even gone so far as to buy all the right stuff. But one of the window seals is also leaking and a list of lots of little things that need to be fixed or looked at.

So here's the deal - we're not very handy, at all. We're thinking it would make sense to have a dealer/service center do a once over on the Airstream from nose to tail, top to bottom and just make sure everything is in perfect order.

We live in the Kansas City, Missouri area and there are no local dealers. We could drive to the St. Louis side to a dealer out there or to the mega dealer in Arkansas but am wondering, does anyone in the KC area use a good service center here? And is it worth it to go to an Airstream dealer (vs a regular RV dealer, of which there are several in a few mile radius of where we live).

Opinions and advice always welcome!!

Thanks so much!

I went to AK .. Was not happy. Blogs about AS dealer on the east side of MO. No good.
Just found a repair center in south Kansas. I have not tried them but will be taking our AS in to have some window work and heater hoses looked at, as well as a few leaks.

Let me know if you already had work done and if you were happy?

We purchased our 2005 from Airstream of Arkansas and have had excellent service experiences there. But a couple of years ago we were near St. Louis when we discovered our entrance door had blown open and was badly sprung. We went to the Bill Thomas Airstream dealer without even an appointment and they worked us in, repaired the door so you could not tell anything ever happened, and we were on our way to Florida about three hours later. They have an impressive maintenance technicians there and it would be well worth your drive to get professional service from people who really understand Airstreams. We would not trust anyone but a trained Airstream mechanic to work on our unit.

We need the waste valve rapaired on our '62 Tradewind. Given the age of the trailer and materials involved I was afraid that it may require a 7 gal tank replacement too. Tried to call Bill Thomas in St. Louis all winter and was never able to get ahold of the lady that ran the serivce department. Finally in February I got ahold of her and was told that I should have called during the winter - they're too busy for that project in the spring .

I've done all the work myself on our Tradewind, but thought this should be an easy inexpensive fix for a certified A/S shop. I don't have the time this year to mess with it - but would like to get out for some outings. Guess we'll have to park close to the shower house.

Let me know too - if there's anyone near KC who is Airstream experienced and willing to take on new customers.

Repair work in South Kansas, RV repair center was the best. This is not an A S repair
center, but he has worked on a lot of them. They fixed my leaks and windows. All winter no leaking and no fog in the windows.... yes yes yes so happy

Yes I would say so. Gas is just a spot in the road.
Good luck. Let me know how it works out.
I need to get with them and have some work done on my jack.

this is NOT an official announcement.

in fact it MAY not even be reliable info...

but my understanding is that a NEW a/s dealership is headed toward the greater metro KC region.

often times large, multi brand car dealers NAIVELY get into a stream franchise.

after all if you can sell carzntrucks, u can sell traylahs...right?

so it would seem THAT scenario may be unfolding near BBQville.

IF that is reliable info, the next part is even more interesting.

a MERCEDES BENZ dealership may be the new a/s shop owners.

there are 2 m/b dealers in metro KC,

one is owned by an extremely LARGE dealer empire (about 8 brands)

while the other is owned by a smaller but aggressive dealer mogul.

i will leave the speculatin' as to WHICH may be selling silver trailers soon...

and on which side of the state line.
__________

who knows, IF this is true...

it might just get richL to swing by and do a story on EACH vehicle (merc' n stream)...

although he's not big on this river city who knows?

the aromas might get him sniffing this way...

and as canoestream likes to sing...

cheers

2Air: You're right, as usual. This month's Blue Beret announced the new dealership at Mercedes Benz of KC, 13851 Madison Ave., KCMO, 816.943.7000. In my short time as an AS owner, I've confirmed what I learned with other vehicles and boats: fostering a good relationship with a dealer leads to the best service. Bill Thomas has given us great service. But it can't be a bad thing to have a local dealer if they develop a good service staff. Best wishes, John

no clue as 2 when...

and 1 correction to post #10...

the 2 m-b shops are now owned by ONE company...

and it's a much larger enterprise than we might imagine.

Automotive Dealerships | Soave Enterprises | Soave | Anthony Soave | Tony Soave

notice the diversity of their holdings outside vehicle dealerships...

this is billionaire stuff.

how that impacts/plays out in the relatively mundane world of rv'n is unknown...

but this group with detroit roots is all over the showmestate.

and appears to have enough financial topsoil to grow a substantial shop.
_________

back to things in bbqville...

the rv dealerships are typically out where land is less $ and interstate access easy.

while we may like to think 'stream is a marque brand it's still an rv with rv shop needs.

inventory space, parts, repair/service bays, access via OPEN roads and basic REQUIREMENTS like a dump station...

and HISTORICALLY a clientele that includes a LOT old geeeeezer who need a few parts or want a new fridge installed...

and THESE folks will be driving domestic iron, carrying dogs and want a place to CAMP over night...

every new dealership deals with these things.

just erecting the sign pulls a lotta old streams/ers in outta thin air...

but IF the goal is anything more than a hobbist/showroom for a few units...

for example something LIKE the BT dealership which really COULD be the proto type...

for a full service dealership with the facility to SUPPORT streamers...

well, building something like THAT will mean taking a risk.
_______

of course the focus MIGHT be younger hip design-wise multitaskin' tweetr's...

who wanna tow with the kiddie taxi (m or g class suv)

or nearly retired who would like something to go behind the e class convertible...

or urbanecotroops who want something to fit behind their honda fit...
_______

it could be interesting.

the larger auto group that appears to be opening this a/s outlet...

does have a blue oval shop in d'history,

so maybe they'll demo some sensible real rig/setups too...

cheers

Friends: I heard this week that Mercedes Benz of KC doesn't intend to become an Airstream dealership at all. They're just looking to service Interstates and other Sprinters. In the meantime, here's a KC Northland dealer with full service, indoor storage, parts, etc. And they do factory-authorized service for most Airstream components: Premier Coach Services, Sales and Rentals of Kansas City, Missouri, dealing in RV sales, RV service, RV parts, RV repair, Rv rentals. Best wishes, John

Thanks! I saw the MB dealer only had a Sprinter and wondered what was up. I used Olathe Ford RV (Gardner) KS for minor stuff and they were great! But I'll keep the one near riverside in mind. I wish we had a local dealer though.

Mercedes Benz of Kansas City was showing the Airstream Sprinter at the Auto Show this week and I'd say it was the most elegant vehicle there. Or at least in the top two. Wouldn't the Sprinter look great in red at Arrowhead Stadium?
