Removing A/C vent covers-2016 International

Want to remove the interior vent covers to check the filters. Is there a proper way to do this without scratching the ceiling?
Thanks

They are tough.

I have taken to lifting one edge then getting both sets of fingers in one edge and pulling.

I think I might get a paint can opener from Lowe's or Home Depot next time.

One person told me a small flat screwdriver but said to be careful.

Use a plastic putty knife, then your fingers, it won't scratch the aluminum.

I just remembered -- I used a 12" plastic ruler to start the vent coming out last time I cleaned the vents.
