Recommendations for battery compartment?

Hey guys. Overhauling a 76 Overlander. I see that a lot of people end up installing multiple batteries in the cabin under the bench seats or at the hitch, depending on if ventilation is needed, so I figured I'd probably go this route as well.

That makes me wonder what people do with the existing battery compartment. Should I clean it out, attempt to seal it off so it's waterproof, and store tools and other crap in there?

Here's a photo of the existing compartment... aside from the visible beehives, it looks like sealing it off may require a fairly thick gasket due to the gap at the top... I assume that was for battery ventilation?
