PPE during AS Renovation

Hi All,

I'm wondering if Airstream ever used products with harmful chemicals such as asbestos or lead paint? and if I should be wearing a respirator during any of these processes. Thanks in advance!

Any paint from before the mid-80's could have lead, any flooring from the same timeframe could have asbestos. A ventilator mask is a small piece of mind for taking some cautions, even if it's only sawdust that you're keeping out of your lungs.

Just to confirm - yes, the original floor tiles in a '64 have asbestos and most likely the mastic holding them down. The original paint does not - but no telling if it's been repainted. Also, no telling what havoc "critters" have caused over the years...I wouldn't want to breathe in that either. Good idea to be careful, better safe than sorry.

Well said. If any rodent nests and/or feces are being removed, the risk of Hantavirus should be considered, especially if the infestation is recent IMO.

Here is a post in a fairly recent thread -- click on orange arrow to go directly there, and to see the next post from the OP with a good photo of the exposed belly structure and comment about rodents.

The previous owners may have introduced other items which have been proven to be harmful. My advise is to treat everything during teardown as being harmful. Better safe than sorry...

PS -- ran out of edit time before.

Also see the OP Krek's Post #43 in that referenced thread:

My handy couple lost their enthusiasm pretty quickly and ended up getting everything demoed as quickly as possible. In their defense, we had seven layers of plywood/Luan/MDF/tile on the floor. It was literally over two inches thick.

Next step is to hazmat suit up and shovel/vacuum the acorns, rodent feces and dirt dabber nests out so we can drop the belly pan.

Then we’ll start removing the inner skins.

FYI these search results show a couple of local pest control services which mention Hantavirus, as well as a doctor in Decatur.

Worth some phone calls to them, and perhaps to the prior owner(s) to inquire about HV risks IMO.

Good luck!

Covid protection

I try to keep my lungs as free of foreign substances as possible no matter how benign...especially now with how the virus enters our bodies.
