My zip d is stuck due to a bent arm and I can't get it back in. When the awning is retracted as shown in the picture can I take off the end cap without the spring that retracts the awning and spinning around in a dangerous fashion like a garage door with a broken spring.
Send a picture. I didn't bend mine but had to partially disassemble it so that I wouldn't bend it. (Long, stupid story.) I am totally unqualified to say anything about that spring system.
The spring must be carefully unwound before you take the end piece off.You can find instruction on the ZipDee website and probably on the Airstream site as well.Takes a couple of people to do it but is not complicated to do.

It is easy to unwind. I took my awning off and had it restitched a couple of weeks ago. Putting it back on was a breeze...If you have the lock, you can lock spring.
The manual gives you the procedure to hand crank the awning in with a socket wrench. Whatever you do, do not attempt to travel without the awning fully retracted!
