Microwave resets Generator
While Boondocking in the Southwest this spring, I’ve noticed that the microwave oven will randomly kick the breaker on my el cheapo 2500 watt Champion Inverter/Generator. At first I thought it may be due to the size of the meal I was cooking, which is common in any electrical transfer function (ie less energy required to nuke a cup of water vs a frozen meal), but later discovered that it was due to the charge on my AGM batteries in the camper. How so? If the batteries are down, the generator will attempt to recharge them while powering the Microwave Oven. This of course overloads the generator and kicks the generator’s circuit breaker (20 amp limit) off. I have measured the Microwave to pull about 12 amps, so I figure the batteries were needing greater than 8 amps to make this happen. The solution to the problem was to simply disconnect the battery converter inside the camper (fuse/ breaker box) while running the Microwave. I suspect I could do the same thing when running the air conditioner and get by on 1 generator instead of using 2 generators hooked together with the parrallel kit, but I haven’t tried it. Any thoughts?
