microwave replacement

The Dometic microwave in Gretchen, our 2004 25' Classic has failed. Is there a good reason to replace it with what seems to be a high cost camper model microwave, or would any standard lower cost unit that fits in the cabinet work well? The failed unit is a model CDMW12. Thanks.

I can't speak to this particular model or installation, but when I was looking at microwaves for our trailer I saw many which would fit but which specifically stated in their manual that they were not intended for built-in installations.

I'm guess that this all has something to do with how the ventilation is configured in the microwave so that it can operate in a built-in installation and still maintain adequate air flow.

There is no magic RV microwave that I am aware of....kind of like RV toilet paper. Yes Dometic makes one that puts up with more vibration, but other than that, not a heck of a lot of difference that I know of....

I promise you, the Samsung microwave that the factory put into my rig was not a designated RV microwave. I am going on year 18 with it and only twitch/tick on odd number days due to the heavy exposure to escaping non-RV microwave energy. I've reduced the risk by wearing an hat made of alum foil.

In all seriousness though, find one from a reputable manufac that fits the location and you should be fine. The factory did place sufficient venting to accommodate a size per size swap.

I am cheap and simple. I bought a small microwave at Walmart for about $60. It works fine. I deliberately bought a 700 watt model. The previous one was still working when I replaced it but it was old and drew around 1300 watts. Sometimes it blew my breaker. It drew more power than the AC. I like the new one with the lower draw a lot better. The new microwave survived a month long road trip to Texas so I guess it is tough enough. My generator will like it better too.
