Lucy's Steps Have Broken

The same thing happened to the steps on our "08 23' CCD except the rod broke on the left. It was an easy fix. Break the weld on the side which is still attached, drill out the holes large enough to accommodate a good size bolt and bolt each end.

Anybody have ideas on how to safely remove steps from a 31 1993 Excella?
