Jayco 100% PDI

I just watched this youtube ) video and apparently Jayco is doing 100% inspection before the trailer leaves their factory.

I'm curious if Airstream has any plans to do the same?

For those of you who have toured the new factory have you seen any evidence of this being done?

More corporate hoohah. You cannot inspect quality in, it must be built into the processes and procedures that build the product. One operator is screwing up an assembly operation on the line and the inspector at the end of the line is tagging it up. Hooray! One hundred percent inspection.
Is anybody improving the operation so we don’t have to tag it up? Heck no, that will take time and money. Let’s spend our money tagging at the end of the line. 100% final inspection. Hooray . Hooray.
The operator making the mistake over and over? Let’s just make him/her work faster.
100% final inspection is a joke. Fix the source of the mistakes.

And yet, we enable this flawed thinking by continuing to buy this “shiny stuff”.

Gene I'm in total agreement with you with the exception of it being corporation hoohah. I'm totally aware of the fact that quality is a result of the process. I'm a disciple of Deming and an adherent of lean manufacturing techniques which espouses quality at the source. My personal philosophy is that everyone comes to work with the desire to do good work. It is management systems, or lack thereof, that allow mistakes to be made, and poor quality to happen.

If these disciplines were followed when building RV's the quality would be much better and the companies building them would save lots of money.

But doing a quality check at the end of the build process is better than doing no check at all. And I think it is a step in the right direction for Jayco to be doing this. Are they very late to the party? Yes indeed! But at least they know a party is happening.

I am just curious what AS is doing in this regard.

You can’t know if one of the assembly line workers is doing substandard work unless there’s an inspection.
Find the problem and fix it before it leaves the factory. Concurrently, go to the source of the problem and exert corrective influence to avoid future problems. Continue inspecting to ensure compliance.
