Hubble Twist-Lock

I pulled this receptacle from the front, curbside area of my '59 Caravanner. It was positioned just beneath an aluminum tag label warning about reversed polarity. It appears to provide a connection to the tow vehicle's electrical system, maybe to charge the trailer batteries while you travel.

Could someone tell me the purpose for this receptacle and is there a good reason to replace its function???

Chances are it was for a pick-up truck with a gen-set in the bed. Looks to be a 30 amp plug (3 prong), cord appears to be lacking...
