How to remove high quality duct tape

Last spring in a hurry to close things up, I sealed shut one of the access doors with that very, very sticky duct tape, the kind with real reflective backing. HUG MISTAKE@!!! Extremely hard to remove! The temperature is in the thirtys. Do you think it will be easier when it gets warmer? If so, would a heat gun make it easier yet? With patients, I think I can scrape away the backing without scratching the aluminum but then, what kind of solvant will disolve the adhesive which thick and still very elastic/sticky. Note that the backing does not appear to have nearly enough strength to allow peeling the tape off in long strips. HELP!! Any and all ideas appreciated.

It should be easier when it gets warmer.

Can you align it so the sun shines on the door? Duct tape wasn't meant for outdoor use and the UV will help break it down. Sounds like that has already started.

WD40 will remove the adhesive. You might try charcoal lighter fluid too.

Warm weather will help. I used mineral spirits on a rag successfully and it did not take the finish off the trailer.

When all else fails for taking sticky stuff off, Skin-so-soft Avon bath oil. it does change plastic but should work for any metal as long as metal isn't painted. I have used paper towels to hold liquid in place on flat surface, don't know about upright.

A hair dryer helps to heat it enough so that it won't pull off paint or veneer.

There is a goo be gone product that will do it right away...also try 91% rubbing alcohol from walgreens ( it must be that percent) The goo stuff is in the paint dept. in any walmart...plus acetone will work too.

3M™ General Purpose Adhesive Remover

After months of duct tape residue in the sun, this was the only stuff that worked.

We had 12 years of clear packing tape wrapped all the way around our trailer, about 12 layers. Nothing but Airplane Stripper would work (we tried everything) and it did a SUPER job. BUT, I would not use it on a trailer that has been sealed.

Avon Skin So Soft is mainly mineral oil - so try that first - it's dirt cheap.

Many adhesives come loose with
1) plain old vegetable oil
2) peanut butter - which also removes chewing gum from kids hair

Try the cheap easily available stuff first, then move up to things others have recommended. All of the above take about 5 minutes to start working.

Good luck, Paula
