Help with Chrome Plating removal

Looking for some help and suggestions. Years ago, I purchased my Rocktamers with the chrome plated aluminum yoke and arms. Of course, water got under the chrome and the aluminum has oxidized and lifted most of the chrome plating off. I decided to clean up, prep and paint. Problem is, about 90% of the plating comes off and 10% is still well adhered to the aluminum substrate. How can I get the remaining chrome off? I've poked, scraped and wire wheeled all I can get mechanically. Is there a solution which will etch and lift the chrome? Can I paint over some of the chrome? If so, prep suggestions?

Someone is bound to say, "Just replace the yoke." Well, a few years ago, when I had more money than time, I would have. I now have more time than money.......you get it.

Email these guys and see if any of their Blue Bear products will work on it. It's a fairly new process made from soy. Very safe to use.

On the rear bumper of our 73 Blazer a lot of the chrome had rusted and flaked off, what didn't come off by scraping was loosened up by heating,(blue chrome) & hammer tapping as it cooled. Power wire brush, heavy sanding and 2 coats of brush on enamel and it was ready for another 2 yrs.

You can take it to a chrome plating shop and they can dip the item to remove the plating. Usually it will be chrome on nickle. I have had bumpers done so I could paint them.

Have you considered “reversing” the chrome-plating process?

Chrome is plated onto a substrate using electro-plating processes. The chrome can be just as effectively removed by reversing the current.

I tried muriatic acid on a hubcap recently and it really did a job. may find at a pool supply(swimming) dont breathe the fumes and wear protection

Muriatic acid will eat aluminum.

It is fact when we were racing 2 cycle motorcycles. When pistons seized in cylinders, used muriatic acid to clean aluminum out and some times deposits were heavy, did not damage steel liners in cylinders, after cleaning, good to go no further cleaning needed

I was going to say just leave it near the brick wall when my masons are cleaning brick. Chrome comes off doors rust and the brick looks ok. Acid won't like the aluminum very well. Never heard of chrome over aluminum.
