Freshwater tank filling on it's own?
We have a 2018 Classic and are parked with shore water on.
When we left home the freshwater tank was at 35%.
Yesterday (after 3 weeks parked) i noticed the tank
was at 90%? Not sure how this could happen?
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Water pressure from the city water hookup pushes past the on board pump and slowly fills up the on board freshwater tank. There could be a weak seal in the pump, or a piece of grit stuck in the pump seal that allows the water to seep backwards past the pump and in to the freshwater tank.
First thing I'd recommend is unhook city water inlet and use the on board pump for a day or two. Some times this will rectify the situation.
Then hook up the city water again in a couple days and monitor the freshwater tank to see if it's been resolved.

Hi
Both the shore water and the fresh water tank hook to the same pipes in the trailer. There are "back flow" valves that stop the water pump from pushing water out the shore water input. There also is a valve that should prevent the shore water from backing up into the fresh water tank.
Both of these valves can get crud in them. Both can leak as a result. The valve on the shore water input can easily have freeze damage. In your case, the quick fix is to run the water pump for a bit. This usually clears any crud. It might be worthwhile to clear the strainer before you do this.

I'm guessing the strainer is on the water pump. How do you get to it?

We snow bird in Tucson and the water has its share of mineral deposits. Going from pump operation to shore and back occasionally resulted in the tank filling at random times. We leave the fill door open just in case. A couple of times the fresh water tank has overflowed through the vent.
We do cycle the pump a few times to clear the check valve seat on the pump and that seems to work. For a while.
If we have no need for onboard water we can leave the tank drain open. Either way works to prevent tank over pressurization and damage.

Just a little suggestion beyond all the above. I wouldn’t leave the city water on when not occupying the trailer. A pipe could easily burst, and you would be in for a very bad day when you returned. Just saying!

Ditto #7. Also , use a Camco Blue filter on the city water line and also when you manually fill the fresh water tank. I have done that on two trailers with no back fill problems for 30 years.

Hi
When you dive in to winterize your trailer, you will find the water pump mounted in some odd place. Attached to the input to the pump / part of the pump is a little strainer gizmo. You dump them once a year as part of the winterize process. ... hmmm .... don't winterize you say? Still need to clear the strainer once a year.

When our trailer was brand new we had this happen to us. Dealer said it was a bad check valve in the pump which allowed city water to flow into the holding tank. The pump was replaced under warranty and all was well.

Mine did that when hooked to city water. It was the check valve mounted on the very front of the pump. A very easy repair.

Our did same when new. Running pump corrected for a couple of years. Last fall it started slowly leaking by again. Bought just the check valve and replaced. No problem since. I remember the valve being just over $20. We do try to remember to turn city water off when leaving for any extended period.

The pump has a check valve built in. It is common that they fail or leak allowing city water to fill the fresh tank. Sometimes you can stop a leak by running pump to clear crud that causes a leak in check valve. I kept having the problem and simply installed an additional brass check valve. It’s a cheap fix, parts available at hardware or plumbing store.

You can just buy one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/Camco-23303-B...%2C158&sr=8-42
... and put it on the inlet side of the pump. Fixed forever and it took ten minutes (assuming you can find the pump!).

Great suggestion, Rob. Does backflow valve install take place before the strainer or after? Does it matter? Thanks

Doesn't matter a bit... just put it wherever it's easier to get to. I installed one of these even with NO issue with the pump's built-in check valve. I like to proactively do whatever I can to prevent bad stuff - or even nuisance stuff - from happening.

I see the shurflo pump in our AS has NPSM threads on the inlet and outlet. This valve is NPT threads.
Have you had any problems with the check valve threading onto the water pump?

We never have the "shore" water hooked up, consequently the pump one way has never failed.
POI we fill the tank when needed without worry.

This is the reason...at 3am it poofed, cross threaded at the factory, repaired on the road with MarineTex 13 yrs ago.
