Found that funny smell!!
I have only had my 1966 Safari a few weeks now. It has had a musty smell since bringing it home. Kind of like going over to Grandmas house!! The PO had built in a base covering the entire front seating area and put in a 4 inch thick blue foam pad. They lived by the ocean and had the moisture thing going. The foam pad had some odor issues so out into the yard it went. My dog loved it but I still smelled it every time I walked by so I cut it up and took it to the trash.
The smell in the trailer was not as strong but still there. I was reading last night on the forum about the forced air heater. It is quite old and I decided to throw it away and replace it with something else. I live in Nor Cal and I don't plan on going anywhere that cold! When I pulled the wood surround on the front I saw a bottle in there on the right side. On the left side I saw a can of soup. This heater was installed beneath the sink. The shelf above the heater did not go all the way to the wall. Some PO had put in window screen from the shelf to the wall to keep more cans from falling back there but did not remove the cans that had fallen. There were four cans of Sardines in various states of rust along with cans of Peaches and Soup. The soup cans seem to be intact. The amazing thing is that the PO had written the date on the lid of several cans. 7-88. Just a month shy of being 20 years old!
The PO's I bought it from had owned it for about four years so this was all going on while they were using it! Kinda makes me wonder what elsr I will find as I go thru it!!

I have washed my hands several times with that Orange pumice stuff. The smell of those sardines doesn't want to come off!

I know that "can't get clean" feeling...20 year old sardines can't be easy to shake!
Good luck with the rest of your project, let's hope there are no more surprises like that!

Yuck! It is amazing what can fall down behind the shelf over the furnace. I hope there are no more "surprises" for you.

If any of those soup cans looked like this one it may be worth some big $$

Oh yes and about the sardines. Any time these guys show up I start looking for sardines right away.
Anyhow I couldn't be happier that you found the problem. I know when I brought my AS home it had a slight odor until I threw out the original twin mattress. It was 34 years old, and that is a long time to pick up some real funk.

Yowsa, twenty-year-old food waste!
What a find. Do you think any of the POs were coin-collectors? Starting digging around, you might strike it rich!

aye-yi-yi, just when I thought-all is okay, i read this. well, i haven't torn apart the furnace, yet, and of course, all kinds of odors could linger there. I am sorry you have had this misfortune, glad, tho that ya found it. Hope your future discoveries are more delightful. good luck on rebuild/restore.
...off to deodorize the furnace....
