Door Hinge Pin Rising

I have a 2007 30 ft Classic that the bottom door hinge pin keeps working its way up and almost out. I keep pounding it down but it will not stay. I have lined up the whole and put in a rivet, but it sheers it off. What can I do? I there a different pin that can be put in?

After your Airstream was made the company began installing a hinge pin with a slot in it for a keeper ring to hold it in place. You can get them from Airstream or their dealers, maybe others.

The new ones have a small C clip on the pin between the door jam and door part of hinge to keep it from moving..

When we bought our 2005 Classic 30 (used), someone had obviously had the same problem and fixed it by staking the pin in place.

i.e., going around the circumference of the pin at the top edge when the pin was in its proper position, with a center punch, and 'popping' it every ninety degrees.

It has never moved in the six years we have been using the trailer.

My 2007 Classic has the same problem. It was staked like Wingeezer's, but the pin is working its way past the old staking. Time to redo it.

I have an 07 classic with the identical issues, but with the top hinge. It was staked and I have staked it numerous times, but it keeps coming out. It has gotten so bad that now I cannot take a short trip without it coming out. I am going to drill and an adjacent hole and tap it and then insert a screw with a large head to capture the hinge pin. Hopefully that will work otherwise I will have to change the hinge.

You don't have to change the hinge ,you can just order a new hinge pin with slot and c clip. You can purchase through any Airstream Dealer. They are pretty straight forward to change.

Do yourself a favor and buy the new, grooved pin with c-clip from Airstream. It's an easy repair. And there's no need to go through great lengths to remove the old pin (like drilling the underside of the hinge). Just let it creep up like it tends to do, high enough to get some side cutters on it, and you can lever it on out. The new pins work great.

There's a reason why it comes up: vibration. In California, it's caused by poor roads. But wherever, something is inducing excessive vibration. After you replace the pin(s), you may want to check to see that the hinge screws are tight (mine were not); you may want to check you're wheel balancing; or you may want to check your tires.
