Dometic or Zip Dee Awning?
I have a Dometic Awning on a Vintage Airstream that I have just purchased. The fabric is in need of replacement but the hardware looks to be in good working order. I have not pulled it all the way out yet because I was worried I couldn't get it back in and it has been raining quite a bit. I see a lot use the Zip Dee Awnings and I am wondering are they better, worse or comparable. If I don't have to change I would be money ahead and if I do is it going to leave holes because mounting hardware is different. I am also wondering if Dometic offers Awnings for the road side and rear like Zip Dee as I would like to add them in the future.
Thanks

I would keep what you have. I am not all that impressed with the Zip Dee design on my trailer. I think Camping World has replacement fabric for them.

Thanks Perry, It does look like it is a lot sturdier than the Zip Dee. I do like the fact that you can bring the legs down and stake into the ground and have the arms out of the way as well as keep them attached to the trailer.

One option you may consider is to order the fabric from Zip Dee (they can make it to fit your Dometic hardware) because their fabric resists rotting. Their contact info is:

We liked that feature with the awning we had on a little motor home we used to have. It was nice not having to duck to avoid walking into the awning arms.
It isn't standard, but you an actually bring the legs of a Zip Dee awning down and stake them if you have the right hardware in place. The down side is that it makes closing the awning quickly more difficult if you need to do it in a hurry.

I have a 31 foot trailer with a 22 foot Zipdee awning. Nobody else makes one that long from what I have heard. I like that the arms etc. are so slim and unobtrusive. Looks really elegant. The fabric is the Cadillac of fabrics therefore the cost.
And close it when you aren't there! Ask me how I know.

Another vote for Zipdee. They have great customer service and their parts don't change every year or so.

I think all of the awnings use Sunbrella fabric.

Thanks for all the replies. As a new member I really like the support. I believe I will keep the Dometic Awning and replace fabric instead of purchasing a whole new one. I do like the awning fro the road side as well and for the rear bath window. I have emailed Dometic to see what they have available but I am sure that they must have these available.

I have seen the Dometic replacements in the Camping World Catalog. They maybe cheaper than factory direct.
