DEF problems

We just had the schedule A service completed on our 2014 Airstream Sprinter, and then traveled about 1000 miles. We checked the DEF because we like to keep it topped off. The DEF was totally full, in fact it was slightly over flowing and dripped down the outside of the hose making quite a mess. Should would be concerned as we do not want to get the dreaded out of DEF shutdown?

We have 2016 4X4 paasenger sprinter. We get about 14 mpg speeding along at 80. Usually commuting between our two places, one in colorado and one in indio, we get 7500 miles before DEF indicator lights up. We do have a DEF gauge found by toggling steering wheel buttons. Our tank is mounted in the right front fender. Our old van, 2010, the tank hung under chassis behind cockpit passenger seat. We havent determined if tank is 2 1/2 or 5 gallons
Also, Mercedes created some “grace” in response to low def levels. Sprinters Dont Go Into a “limp” mode immediately out of DEF. you get a few turns of the key to start motor unencumbered driving normally before any shutdown happens

Are you concerned that itís overflowing, not using def to your expectation, or do you actually have some sort of indication light on?

We are concerned that it is overflowing and usage is low. No indicator lights have appeared.

I have a 2019 RAM 2500 Limited. I realize this is not your vehicle; however, maybe there are similarities with DEF.

I noticed when I top mine off, it takes a very long time for the gauge to start showing DEF use. Then after 1,500 miles - it starts going down normally.

Could this be you? Or are you saying itís topped off and after youíve driven 1,000 miles - itís still overflowing?

Sounds like the dealer simply over-serviced your DEF tank. Not an issue unless you encounter freezing temperatures (in that case, DEF expanding as it freezes could damage the tank).

Keep on trucking. I donít think you have a problem.
