Black tank valve handle and rod missing

Got to our campground this evening and started to set up. Then I see that the rod and handle that you pull to open the black tank is gone. The gray tank one is still there. Do they screw in and out. I assume I can use the Gray tank one on the black tank? How do I keep this from happening again?

Mine is riveted on but I could still pull the rod closest to the tank as a temporary solution. Sorry to hear this.
