Awning conundrum

We recently purchased a 1989 Excella with an awning that is not functional. The previous owner had it for 20 years and was unable to get the awning to function correctly either. It appears that at some point a zipdee locking spring has been installed on the rear that is locked up. The zlock on the front seems that it may not be locked up and would function. We have consulted with zipdee and they said this was a very unusual set up and that we needed to force it open. Have tried pulling with 3 people to no avail, don’t want to pull so hard we rip the awning and metal cover off the airstream. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone dealt with this before? Any safe way to take it apart without locked spring unleashing on us and/or airstream? How much force is enough/too much? Help!
