Thumbs up Advice for a newbie

Im planningon buying a vintage airstream to restore with my dad.
Was hoping you guys could give me some pointers on what to look out for to make sure the "bones" of an old girl are solid before I buy it..
I plan on gutting the inside once I buy one but not sure what signs to look for that indicate extreme trouble.

Thanx

Dave

There are several threads on this subject - here is a recent one that was particularly good. Good luck with your hunt.

And, I might add, I think that if you're going to "gut" an Airstream, I'd rather you did it to one that's well on it's way. Why destroy a perfectly good Airstream, when there are so many that are already half torn apart? And thus, you will find trailers that need a lot of renovations such as new axles, floor replacement and windows.

Here's one that you could get for a song I think, and it's already gutted. You have to buy windows and fix the floor, replace the door lock and who knows what else, but all within the realm of possible. Want a project, this is it:

67 Safari ruff

The skin is all in decent shape, and it has all the vent lids, plus the bath is there, mostly. If you're handy this is one that could be brought back to life.

I agree with John. Tear up one that is already on its way to being torn up.
I see no reason to gut a trailer that has a good interior.

Not only that,

A semi-gutted Airstream will cost much less than one that is ready to roll to a campground. You can then use the money you saved buying it, to get a good start on rehabbing it the way you want. Also, part of the work has been done for you, with one that has been gutted.

I wouldn't be afaid of the one on Ebay... but unlike everyone else.. I'd buy the best I could find. He said he was going to redo it, so pick anything you want. I think they might be pointing to the fact that most don't ever get finished and another camper get's killed.
You should spend some time on the site looking around, see what you like, and don't. Size,year,style,condition... they all matter. Are you single or have a family with kid's. Amount of bed's.. stuff like that.

Floor rot is a big problem because of what it takes to fix-it, and to fix what created the problem. What can you afford?

Best of luck, if you've dreamed it... someone has done it here. Ask away.

IMHO
