201630’ classic Kohler shower valve issue

My kohler shower valve delivered only scalding hot water on a recent use. The following day it gave only cold. And then another time cold all around until the hottest setting it delivered slightly warm water. All my other faucets have great hot/cold so I know it’s the cartridge. I went to change the cartridge to find that the hold is to small to actually remove it thru the fiberglass shell. How stupid is this. This is a common maintenance item. Do I really need to remove the entire shower shell?? I have attached a photo as evidence of the crime lol.

Yup. It’s a) stupid and b) par for the course.

You need to carefully enlarge the hole in the Fiberglas shell just enough to pull the cartridge.

Search the forums for some methods.

I was able to remove the wall in my bedroom. The wall that backs up to the control and access things. I have a flying cloud. I had a pipe leaking water on floor and bedroom
