1969 Sovereign rear sag

We have a 1969 Sovereign and want to have a ‘professional’ survey it for the dreaded rear end separation issue before we decide to keep it or sell it. We live near Ft Wayne, Indiana. Any suggestions on who or where to take it to for an evaluation?

Have you went and pushed on the bumper yourself?

If there is play between the bumper and body, there is a structural failure.

Have you looked around with a flashlight? Poke around with a screwdriver in the corners to feel for soft spots?

I have the utmost confidence you can DIY your inspection because you are capable and rear end separation is usually painfully obvious.

Ft Wayne isn’t too far from Jackson Center. Will they take a peak?

If it’s a rear bath it has failed. The rear crossmember, you know the one that is tied to the shell and it is supposed to hold up the frame? It’s only a 3/4 x 2” channel laid flat. It can barely hold itself! Huge design error.

It doesn’t take much to check it yourself. Push down on the back bumper with two hands and watch if the bumper moves before the shell does. A tiny bit - you can live with it for a while. But check it frequently to see if it’s getting worse.

Even better - post a video for us.

It is a rear bath. What is the recommended repair for this design error?

The best way? Remove the bathroom completely and replace the rear section of floor.

The main cause is floor rot where the shell was attached. The shell holds the frame up at the back (the frame is relatively light) but when the floor rots the connection starts to fail.

You can search online for other interim repair options.
