Trailer Brake Issues

I just purchased a 1975 Sovereign (31 ft) and am having trouble with the trailer brakes. The previous owner disconnected the trailer brakes on the seven way connector. I rewired and was able to get all of the lights working again, but my 2004 Dodge 2500 is prewired for trailers and seems to be locking up the brakes when I plug it in. I just bought a new Prodigy brake controller and it indicates that there is a short in the system. I don't know where to start looking for the short, but would like to give it a try before taking it in to the shop. Could it be the way I've wired the plug? Have any of you had similar experiences? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Robin

I have a 2500 Dodge /Prodigy set up and also had fun with the wiring on my 63 GT. Someone had changed the plug on my trailer and the color codes were not what they were supposed to be so things were not connecting properly. After several blown fuses what I did was take the plug off the trailer and checked the individual wires using a car battery and a couple of jumpers to find out what was really powering each light circuit and the brakes Then it was a simple matter to move the wiring on the trailer plug so that it matched the truck. If you are in luck luck this might be the problem. My brakes were matching the left turn signal at first.

Hope its not a short, those can be so much fun to find. Good luck.
