Electric over hydraulic brakes

My wife and I purchased a used 2006 30" Classic that has electric over hydraulic brakes. I also purchased a 2020 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Denali 4X4 that has an integrated brake controller, I am having trouble with it not working with the brakes on the trailer. We also have a 1997 25' Safari with just electric brakes and the truck and trailer brakes work just fine. I need help in what to do to get my truck and the brakes on the Classic to work. Thanks.

If you are all hooked up and press on the brake pedal or apply brakes using the slider control, do you hear a motor/pump sound?

I have a 2007 Classic with EOH and have a decent knowledge of it.

Possibly the pump is not working on the trailer? My 05 Safari has factory EOH brakes and I have the same truck as you. Time to pull out the test light and start diagnosing.

Check the truck owners manual. On the RAM & Ford trucks, there’s a separate setting on the brake controller for EOH brakes. Last I heard, GM didn’t support EOH in their factory brake controller, but that may be fixed on the newer models.

Others have solved a similar problem by taking an old brake magnet and wiring it in between the brake blue wire and ground on the trailer. This fools the TV brake controller into thinking it is working with conventional electric brakes. This was a problem with some older (early to mid 2000's) TVs.

OK, there is a lot of rust in my mind on this issue but here goes. If you have the original brake actuator, I think it was from Dexter, there was an issue with connecting it to an integrated brake controller. There was a module that could be purchased from the auto dealer (?) that was placed between the controller and actuator that told the controller that the actuator is active.

Also, the original actuator had a recall. Check with your AS dealer. The replacement does not have the issue with the IBC.

As I said I'm rusty on this but it is a known problem.

EOH Brake Recall Info

From previous posts...there was a recall on the brake system from 2010 that affects 2005-2009 AirStream Classics.

We bought our 2008 used in 2016 and the recall hadn't been completed on the unit. AirStream funded the parts and labor to complete the repairs. This was the controller and rubber brake lines at the axles. Two separate recalls that affected the brakes.

If it matters our TV is a 15' DMax and the brakes work awesome with the integrated controller.

I've included a copy of the recall info from NHTSA for reference. Any AS Dealer should be able to help you.

Best!

EOH Brakes

Hello
I had the same problem with my 07 classic. I have a 09 Chevy duramax I had to wire a brake magnet in the harness to make my factory controller recognize the trailer.
Good luck Steve

I had a 2016 and 2018 Duramax towing a trailer with electric over hydraulic brakes and the factory brake controller worked fine in both trucks.

2014 and forward (1500s) and 2015 forward for the rest, there is no problem. My 2015 Silverado 1500 works very well with itbc. My AS actuator is the gray (non recalled) unit, is now 14 years old and works flawlessly...if you can believe that! I change brake fluid every 4 or 5 years.

I suggest first pulling the breakaway pin on the AS. If pump doesn't run, theres an AS problem...wiring or actuator.

So the recalled unit is whiteish and the fill cap is up high. The problem with those was a reservoir leak onto the circuit board. This means a failed unit. Since Actibrake is out of business (the recall bankrupted them) you'll have to buy a new one if yours is bad.
I figure it is a matter of time for me, but the second style keeps ticking along.
My favored replacement will be from Tucson engineering.

When I hook the TV to the trailer, I can either press the brake pedal or push the controller slide and the pump works for about 3 seconds and then it stops and on my TV it says check trailer brakes and then goes to service trailer brakes.

Rich - We didn't pay for anything when the recall repairs were done on our unit in 2016...AirStream did. No buying of anything...just time in the shop for them to do it for us. Contact an AirStream Dealer...

Well that's good news. AS is taking it on the chin since actibrake went bankrupt. Maybe they were in line for asset claim.

Pull the pin on the breakaway switch. If it is like gen2, pump should run for 20 seconds then shut off and hold pressure on the calipers.

Can you post a pic of your actuator?

Have you checked the setup controls for the brake controller?
