Brake Pad Thickness

How do you know when you need to replace the brakes. After 30,000 miles I pulled off a brake drum to have a look at my auto adjust brakes. Magnet looks good and the shoes are about 3/32 inch thick. Can I keep going or is it time to replace?

Replace...bonded shoes do NOT like to be thin.🥴
It's not so much how thick thick the friction material is, it's how well it's stuck to the 'shoe'.

You are almost ready for new shoes. I would go ahead and replace them now, before the drums get damaged.

copy/paste from Etrailer.com>
"Electric Brake Assembly # 23-458 the shoe pad thickness is 3/16 of an inch. Dexter says that you should replace the shoes if the material gets down to 1/16 of an inch thick or less."

Thank you AW Warn. After I saw your post I visited etrailer.com and found the same info. Perfect. When I get home from the current 4000 mile trip Iím going to inspect all 4 brakes and measure the thickness. If Iím getting close to 1/16Ē I will replace. Thanks

I pulled all 4 never lube hubs today. All four showed similar and very little wear for 40,000. I measured the shoe thickness at about 0.17 inches. Magnets and drums looked good. I’m pleased with what is less than half worn. I’ll have another look in 2022. Not too big of a job. Needed to use a 2 ft. breaker bar to get the big nut off.
