'63 Bambi brake drum swap

Greetings, I've just bought a Bambi from a friend and will be picking it up in a couple of weeks. It has old B78-13's on it now but I would like to use 14 inch tires instead. Has anyone swapped out the original drums to later model 5 lug drums? I was hoping to use 185-70-14's on it if possible.

Unless I am mistaken, the 1963 Bambi came with Henschen DuraTorque torsion axle, and assuming that it is original, it is well beyond time for replacement. With that as a consideration, my suggestion would be to get a pair of tires to get your through to axle replacement as your new axle will include complete braking assemblies and all you will need to purchase in addition at that time will be new wheels and tires of your choice.

For more information about the DuraTorque axle and how to tell when it is time to replace, check out the following document:

DuraTorque Axle 101 -- Inland RV

Good luck with your Bambi!

Kevin

Thank you for your information! I'm totally new to the airstream scene and trying to learn all I can about the Bambi. I got it for what I think is a very good deal so I definitely plan some upgrades. I'll post pictures as soon as I pick it up but it is a one family owned and is very straight.
