Use your TPMS even when not traveling...

Previously, I only turned on the TPMS when we were towing down the road.

At our current site, on the 2nd or 3rd day there I plugged in the TPMS to charge it. This also turns it on. Big surprise when the alarm went off that a tire was low -- by over 20 PSI! Turns out we had not one but two nails in the tire! One had not gone all the way through but one of the nails was huge and resulted in a slow leak. So the pressure was fine while we were still towing. But after we stopped and set up it continued to leak air.

The bottom line is, if I had not noticed visually that the tire was getting low I would not have discovered I had a problem until just before leaving. Since the nail was close to the sidewall and such a large hole I ended up buying a new tire instead of patching it. The tire shop had to order the tire which took a couple of days. If I had not discovered the problem we would have been delayed a couple of days while waiting on a new tire.

As a "lesson learned", from now on I'll carry the TPMS device into my trailer as part of set up and turn it on periodically to check the tires. Better to find out if you have a slow leak while it is easier to deal with than just before you are leaving a place.

I bought this as the alternative to Ford’s $750 wiring harness and sensors. I put the sensors on my Classic 33, and towing it with a Ford F350 CrewCab so you it’s definitely good at a distance. Works GREAT and only spent $70 on it. Here’s the Amazon link:

There are lots of choices, but many here like the TST system. They're respected for great customer service.
Think about how you want to look at the monitor. Do you want it shown on your smart phone? On a separate monitor?
Shop around for whatever system you choose. You can save up to $100 depending on the seller.

I have the TST system with cap sensors and the color monitor. I couldn't be happier. At first I thought the big advantage was an alarm warning you. Being lazy, it's fantastic to turn the system on and be able to monitor all the tires without getting out the tire gauge!
