Tire Rim etching?

We just noticed this on our 2019 25FB Airstream Trailer. Husb thinks these odd stringy marks around all the circles circles are etched, wife thinks it is from a substance that blew around the while traveling and dried.
Has anyone seen this and have a remedy?

Tire Rim etching?

Do an internet search for Filiform Corrosion.

Would love to say it's an Airstream thing, esp after you do that fillform corrosion search Kevin245 suggested, but most any alum rim will do this.

Options are to have the rim refinished or replaced. I do wash mine and put a liberal coating of wax on my trailer rims 1x a year and have been able to hold it at bay...but it's a loosing battle. Eventually (say 20 years) they will need to be refinished or replaced, particularly if you travel in the rust belt.

Welcome Aboard 👍

Let NASA explain it...

It's not limited to wheels, look for it around rivets and seams on all panels.

We are lucky the Alcoa wheels on 'Cloudsplitter' are not coated and easily polished when needed.

It looks like corrosion is getting under the Clear cote and is a bigger to fix,
you can have them restored, they strip the clear coat, polish and re coat.
Cost prohibitive compared to new.
You can also have them painted and clear coated Silver

Mine aren't as nice as Bob's, but look pretty good for 20 years old.

I just got the trailer this year, he has had his for 17 years....

How I got them on the right and on the left after I polished them and removed some of the dents from the centre capClick image for larger version

You could also have them 'chrome' powder coated.
I had my spare done.
It may be too costly if they also had to be media blasted.

Those are very nice looking wheels Bob. I'm looking for replacements on my 06 Safari. Do you mind sharing the model number of those beautiful Alcoas?
