"Shield" Brand Tires??

I went to talk to my local tire guy about Carlisle tires and he rcommended "Shield" brand 7.00x15 Bias Ply Trailer Tires. They're 8-ply, Load Range D, 2040 lbs. max at 60 psi max. He said he's installed them for quite some time and that's the only one he keeps in stock now because of the quality, durability and price.

This guy's been in our neighborhood for 25 years. I don't have any reason to think he'd steer me wrong, (especially when they're the cheaper option) but I was hoping somebody out there has some experience with these, good or bad.

He quoted $70/Each. That includes mounting, balancing and valve stems... everything but Tax.

Seems like a good deal to me, but is it too good? Think I should steer clear? He said the Carlisles would be $90+/Ea, Goodyear's even more. (Arguably not a huge difference in price between any of them, but enough to make me check 'em out!)

I saw some Shield brand tires today on a round bale hay trailer at a buddy of mines ranch today. Did you know they are made in China? The trailers are made close to here and I called the owner and asked about the Shield brand. He said he is having better luck with them than any others. They are heavy duty tires, maybe too heavy duty for an A/S. I think they are 8 ply's. These trailers are made to haul five round bales at a time plus the weight of the trailer. I am not a rancher so I don't really know how heavy the whole thing can be loaded. There might be even more balancing issues arising from these heavy duty tires?

Not too crazy about the made in China part. Where are the other more popular models made? Any still made in the US?

Anybody else have input on the 8-ply issue, if it's good or bad? I did notice they're only rated for 2040 lbs. each. To the best of my memory that's similar to other trailer tires. But I have no idea if the 8-ply design will affect anything negatively.

Any one else hear of Shield Tires? This post started in 2003, but would be interested if anyone has had any experience with them, good, bad or indifferent.
