Replacing my Goodyear Marathons ST 225/75R15

I am looking to replace my Goodyear Marathons ST 225/75R15. I want to stay with that type and size tire. Besides the Maxxis, are there any other better brands?

"Better" is highly dependent upon individual opinions and those run a bit rampant here, myself no exception.

The identical trailer I own suffered a blowout with his Maxxis. GYM's blow out. So does every other brand on the market. They all meet the requirements of the job, but if they're abused, overloaded, underinflated or just plain tired (old) ....they can fail. There is no magical brand of tire that hasn't had failures.

Don't buy an off-brand unheard-of tire. Buy a major brand. Goodyear, Michelin, Carlisle are all good brands. The very latest in purpose-design trailer tires are from Carlisle "Radial Trail HD" and those are also designed for higher Interstate speeds. http://www.carlstargroup.com/news/products/t741

Tire dealers will not tell you about it until their present-stock of tires (older designs) are depleted. Ask for it specifically if that's what you want.

Discount Tire sold me mine and they appear very robust. Hope this helps.

I ended up with GYMs'. They fit in the wheel well perfectly. I will also use a TPMS.
I had the third & final old tire removed from the original rim tonight. Now sandblast, paint, metal valve stem, tire mounted and done. Done with the wheels anyway. One step closer. ☺

Boxite: Discount Tire quoted me about $550 for four Carlisle's, mounted, with road hazard warranty. Does that sound about right?

I went to Discount tires for Maxxis tires and got a quote and then went to Les Schwab and Schwab was about $100.00 less. So I guess what I'm saying is check out Schwab before making a final decision. Good Luck

I have purchased from Discount Tire in Austin a couple times in the past, and was able to negotiate a little better price when I had "competitive", pricing data with me from an add or internet pricing. (just ask for the manager of your store or call him ahead.) If your getting 4 tires, they are typically motivated if they have the tires. (I would think Schwab would also negotiate...)

That being said, I try to get my tires from Costco and am very happy with Michelins. Many folks using Michelins have same luck as me; no blowouts, long wear, great ride. Many others on this site have good luck with other brands mentioned also. Remember, AS is now offering Michelins at many of their dealers and also on some of their higher end trailers...coincidence or just good pricing from Michelin?

RE: Michelin tires, my previous Michelins on my 31 ft AS lasted about 10 years with no problems and lost of miles. But when I went to replace them Michelins stopped making a trailer tire or LTT in the 15 " size so I went for the Maxxis. Hoping for as good an experience with them. Good Luck to all

After my old Carlisles reached the end of their long and useful life, I replaced them with a set of Carlisle "Radial Trail HD". New tread design, higher load rating, higher speed rating and a price that is hard to beat for the quality. The vendor met me at the storage yard and got them mounted, balanced and installed in less than two hours for under $550 (for four).

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's not a 16" Michelin.

I pur all tires except semi and equipment from discount tire direct. I pd under $100.00 ea. for tire quoted in posts above $12.00 ea. mount and balance no disposal fee and if order from discount tire direct on line no state sales tax. Have to price local and on line some times on line more exp. Local will mount same price etc as same co. Also they repair and rotate free over life of tire They sell many tires so stock is close to manf. time. Important to watch time of manf. as some discount outfits sell old manf. NO GOOD Only prob had w/carlisle over many yrs. was nail thru side wall non repairable.

Just went on line this tire is now $76 from discount tire direct When I pur. 2 yrs. ago $ 118 pd $98.

I am currently running a set of 1 yr old GYM's made in China. While I don't like the idea that they were made in China, they look great and balanced well when I bought them from Sam's Club and the manufactured date was only one month prior. These replaced a 13 year old set of GYM's made in Canada which went about 60,000 miles with no problems.

I installed the Michelin LTX tires (slightly taller) a couple of years ago and have been delighted. The trailers seems to track better and the Michelins provide a smoother ride.

I use nothing but Goodyear Marathons and when we had our rental business all of our campers were outfitted with Good Year Marathons. We simply could not afford a flat tire on a rental somewhere across country or even close by. We tried several different tires and the Goodyear Marathon out performed anything we tried. Further, regardless of where you purchased them any Good Year dealer will honor the warranty.

Anybody have any problems with tire store employees jacking up your Airstream under the axles instead of the axle mounting plates as recommended by Airstream? I find that unless told otherwise the AS will ususally be jacked up by the axle. Sometimes employees are cooperative, sometimes indignant.

I need new tires this spring and have decided to go with them from Tire Rack. I like the upgrades from GYMs - Load Range E - Max Load increase - and speed rating from 65 mph to 87 mph - AND... made in USA

Re: Goodyear Warranty.

Major thread separation on 1 year old GYMs. less tan 10k miles.
After installing the spare we drove to a Good Year dealer in Plant City FL.
He examined the failed tire and the other three and informed me that there were 2 other tires ready to fail as well and be best to have all four replaced. I asked about the warranty and was told there is nothing he could do for me.
I drove across the street to Tire King and had 4 new Michelin LTX /MS2/P235 R15 /108T tires installed. That was 3 years ago. I only need to adjust air pressure a couple lbs when we migrate north from FL in the spring and back in the fall. I should have sent a thank you note to that Good Year dealer for not honoring the warranty.

Amen, I lost 3 GYM'S and bit the bullet to upgraded 16" wheels and Michelin LTX MS 2. 3 years ago and no issues. Love them.

When I replaced my tires, I replaced the spare as well - especially since it was GYM from 2011. I'm surprised to hear others talk about buying only 4 tires. Is that because you're buying LT tires, where age is less critical than with trailer tires?

Roadtech, No shortage of advice and opinions. Personally I'm going with the Nokians 15's this summer but a lot of discussion re Carlisle's and Maxxi's 15's...all viable alternatives to upgrading mich's tires and rims to the 16's.
