If I read it correctly, it seems the tires in question were only provided to Ford for installation on new vehicles being built.
If so, shouldn't affect anyone having bought the tires for their Airstreams?
Makes me think though that I just got my $70 Michelin rebate for buying a set of tires for our trailer a few weeks ago and there was a reminder to register them with Michelin to be sure you received any recall letters - guess I should do that!

Begin excerpt from recall statement:>>>>
and as replacement equipment on various brand commercial light trucks, full-sized heavy duty vans, small RVs and some large pickup trucks. These tires could experience tread separation.<<<<<<
End excerpt.
Looks like people could have bought these tires at a tire store or dealer.

Will be interesting to see how Airstream handles this since they installed the tires on the Eddie Bauer model and supplied them after market to a lot of other Airstream owners - including me. Strongly suspect most tire shops will refuse to install these tires on trailers - even as replacements. Others have run into this problem already when trying to buy 16" Michelin LT tires locally for their Airstream.

I stand corrected, I had just re-read it after posting and noticed that "replacement" section!
I think ours are ok as I believe our date of manufacture was Dec 2012, but I am certainly going to check!

Eddie Bauer Tires
Good catch Boondockdad! These are indeed the model of tire that Airstream provided on our new Eddie Bauer model. The unit is still at the dealer until spring so I have asked them to follow up.

Looks like those to be recalled are made between 0210 and 2512.
5 of my 6 were made in 2013 and 1 skated by being made 3012.

I suppose it isn't a lot of $$, but do tire manufacturers generally absorb tire shop labour charges for changing the tires in a case like this? I imagine they would --- or should!

There haven't been any reports of tread separation in the tire poll with these (unless it got posted really recently). Ours are older, so no worries for us. The NY Times story seems to say only 20 claims out of 1.2 million tire, but reading it closely it sounds like more than that.
Here's the Times story:
Michelin Recalls 1.2 Million Tires
By CHRISTOPHER JENSEN
Michelin North America is recalling 1.2 million tires in the United States — including some used as original equipment on full-size Ford vans — because the tread might come apart, according to a report from the tire maker posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.
Michelin said the LTX M/S tires in a 225/75/16 size were designed for “commercial light trucks, full-sized heavy duty vans, small recreational vehicles and some large pickup trucks.”
Ford used the tires as original equipment on the 2010 through 2013 models of its E-Series vans, a Ford spokeswoman, Kelli Felker, wrote in an email.
The E-Series is a full-size commercial van often used as an airport shuttle and formerly known as the Econoline.
Michelin said it had detected a “tread/belt endurance” problem through warranty claims and 20 claims from consumers seeking reimbursement for damage to their vehicles but there had been no reports of injuries.
At a hundred bucks a tire times 1.2 million, that's $120,000,000, minus the ones that don't come back. If the manufacturer didn't pay mounting and balancing costs to the tire shops, those shops would not be bothering to sell the product ever again. Michelin will have to pick up those costs and disposal costs. At least Michelin takes responsibility for their problem; can we say the same for Goodyear?

So someplace on the outside of the tire you can find whether you are affected. This is from the PDF that was part of the announcement.
LT225/75 R16 115/112R LRE Michelin LTX M/S
DOT TIN B3JHAKEX and DOT date range 0210 thru 2512.

Hi from AZ. . . If you bought the exact tire in the exact size, and the made date falls in the range, Michelin will replace them, period, no matter where you got them (thievery excluded of course) My 20 inchers were recalled, replaced at no charge to me with 6500 miles on them. And my dealer was very pleasant through out the process. And if your tire guy won't install Michelins on your trailer, you really need a new dealer. My local Discount Tire outlet does it all the time., Regards, Craig

The "M/S" and M/S2" are two different tire models. When the M/S2 first came out, I think I recall the marketing literature stating that there were some minor "evolutionary" changes made in tire construction. (For some reason, they made a distinction between "evolutionary", versus "revolutionary".) Perhaps, those changes preclude the problems now being experienced with the M/S; and the M/S2's are OK.
I'll bet that Airstreamers aren't the only ones wondering about the details in this recall; and there will probably be some sort of clarification released on Monday, after they get a flood of questions this weekend.

Even quality based companies that produce top of the line products sometimes have glitches too.

Saw it in the pear this morning - totally missed the thread yesterday. This news could use a bump anyway. I'm planning to buy Continental Vanco 2 tires in the spring. I've run them on my van and they are great tires.

Rats. No fresh free tires here, code doesn't match defective tire code.
