LT tire size

I have a '71 Ambassador 29ft. I replaced the axles with new Dexters and put the lift kit on. I'm now replacing what looks like the original steel wheels with 16 inch Sendel T3's. Discount tire has these Michelins, are they the appropriate model/size? Specifically I'm not clear on the width.

Michelin Defender LTX M/S
235 /75 R16 112T XL

Thanks,
Manning and Sherry

I would stick with the 15" wheels and use Goodyear Endurance E rated ST tire.

Those Michelins will be fine.

235s may be a bit too big for the wheel well. Most 16" conversions use 225/75 16, which is the same as the factory upgrade to 16s as well as stock on the Eddie Bauer and Classics.

The original tires would have been LT 7.00x15. These were about 180 mm wide, and a “90” series. Overall diameter would have been about 27.6”. The 225/75/15 is the most common metric size replacement with an overall diameter of 28.3”. The 235s are wider still, which means they are also taller.
Having said all this, the tires you are looking at would probably fit just fine, and will have lots of capacity to carry the loaded weight of your trailer.

Correction - the aspect ratio on the originals would have been 92%. Overall diameter was about 27.9”.
