Load range D or E?

I'm towing a 34 with a v-10 Excursion which has load range D tires that state 3000 lbs. @ 65 psi. Will these be sufficient to handle the airstream dry weight of 7100 lbs or do I need to buy E's that state 3450 lbs @ 80 psi? One thread here said something like multiply the 3000 lbs by 4 tires and if the result 12000 lbs is more then the weight of the trailer 7100 lbs you are o.k..Is this true?

I don't know what the GVW of your Excursion is, but my Sprinter van is 8550 and it come with LRE tires. I can't believe that LRD tires will hold 3000lb per wheel at 65psi. The LREs that I use (Michelin) have a max cold of 80psi, and I run the rears at 79 and the fronts at 65 per factory recommendations.

I would check the tire manufacturer's web site to see exactly what the load rating of your LRD tires is. Another note, rubber valve stems are NOT rated above 65psi, and in some cases....50psi. I would convert to metal stems in any event, as rubber stems can be an unseen source of leakage and blowouts.

Firestone recalled all of the "D" range tires on the Excursions because of sidewall failures and replaced them with "E" range. "D" range tires have insufficient reserve to handle the weight of the truck alone.

Here's a link to the three-year old thread that discussed the recall:

Replace them.

I am assuming you got your answer.

AND

Your post was a little confusing for me. The tires you are seeking are for your truck???? If so the total trailer weight does not matter too much. Because the weight of the trailer is supported for the most part by the trailer tires. The truck will have to support the tongue weight of the trailer and the contents of the truck and of course the truck it self. Not the 7100 #'s of the trailer. May be 710#'s of the trailer's tongue weight. (IE 10% of the trailer weight)

BTW your excursion with a V-10 is most likely good for towing 11,000 pounds.

E rated tires

I tow a 25' Classic GVW of 7300 lbs. E rated tires are what I was told I needed. I run 60 lbs in front and 80 lbs in the rear and I have never had any problems.
