Is this over the top in airring up tires?

So I have a genset on order and I have been thinking that it would be nice to have an aircompressor in the TV for toping off the air in the tires if needed before getting underway (and the tires heat up and booger the pressure reading). Is this rational, or am I just off in silly land with this one? I dont want to swamp myself with crap I dont need, on the other hand I appreciate the need to have the tire pressures dead on. Thoughts?

I have a small portable one that I carry with me....not too big, also not too fast. It runs on 12v. I would suspect it will do most, if not all that I need....between that, a torque wrench and a hydr jack, life is good.

What does over the top mean??

Among the many many items we travel with is a small compressed air tank for tires. We fill it to 100psi at gas station when it gets low, or with big 110V compressor at home in garage.. Won't fill a deflated tire, but will top up a couple pretty reliabily. Weighs less, and less to go wrong than most of the 12V compressors, which seem pretty flimsy.. We've gone through two of those and developed air fitting leaks and had to toss them...

We also keep a pair of digital guages in the car and trailer... Never can be too sure...

For what it is worth, I am looking at a 110 unit, not a 12V. So it would have more oomph. The problem started at lowes when I was looking at the 7" grinders and saw the priced to own compressors.

Ok I'll admit.....I've looked into this...currently using a 12V its a bit slow, but gets the job done.....the air compressor is still on my wish list......over the top yes.....
On-board air tools....how cool is that....
Also if you get the air storage tank.....you'll need one more add on toy.....I'm mean safety warning device

Portable Air...

Hi Rodney,

This is what the fourwheelers use to air up their big tires at the end of the trail, Viair - Your Vital Air Source. about $275 , not cheap but it has become one of the tools I never hit the road with out.

A lot easier than trying to find a gas station with a working compressor .

I carry a small two gallon air compressor. It will run off my Honda EU2000i.
I have had two flat tires (at different times) in January. If they had been on the side of road I would have had a problem.

We carry a compressor but it needs electricity to work. It doesn't take up too much room and keep it under the bed in the Airstream.

We carry a small compressor that runs off the 12 volt system. It will work as a backup for our pressure water system if we need it.

We too carry a little 'el cheapo 110V unit with us that weight in at 7lbs and cost very little. If I were to leave it behind at a campground no big deal. I fell that what you ned to think of is how much extra weight to you need to carry around and can you. Do you often boondock in no-where land where AAA or Good Sams can't get to? Then you may need one. But other than that cheaper and lighter is better!

I keep a combo jump start/air compressor/light in my truck all the time. 12 volt and recharges. I bought it at Sam's club for 45 bucks. Use it all the time and have used it to run the trailer lights in storage when my battery was dead.

A good (about three times the cost of cheap ones) 12v air compressor is nowhere near the "top", though a 110v model might be climbing on up there. An example of things approaching the top might be my plan to convert the A/C on my old Jeep to a compressor capable of running air tools, and adding a second alternator with diodes suitably bypassed to serve as an emergency booger welder.

If you really want a project, and don't want to carry excess equipment…
Simple Jeep mod: Did this on my Jeep and truck.

We air down tires for off roading to 10-12PSI. At end of the trail you need to air up.

I mounted a York upright auto A/C compressor with electric clutch on my Jeep motor. Belt runs right off fan pulley. Piped the air intake into the engine air filter. Output goes to a big truck brake air tank w/ high pressure cutout mounted tucked up along the frame member, then to a quick disconnect air hose fitting on rear bumper.

Start engine, Plug in air hose, flip dashboard switch and Voila…..all the compressed air you could want. Fill tires, run air tools, pressurize water tanks. The only thing to carry is the air hose.

Cost in parts (all used except air lines) about $75. Knowing it’s there to rely on (and I have)….priceless.

Rodney,

I bought the Husky 2air talks about (I probably got it as a result of his post) and it works fine around the garage but is more than I would want to carry.

This last weekend I noticed at Harbor Freight a 12V (battery clamp) compressor nice and compact but sturdy for about $60 Harbor Freight Tools then I saw a similar cleaner looking model with the same promises in Costco for about the same price. I'd be interested in what anyone has to say that has tried either the Harbor Freight or the Costco model.

with 10 tires on the road and the genset handy, i use husky often...

also carry a 12 volt and i've used it on the road when i didn't want to get out the generator. it is soooooooooooo slow.

craftsman now has a 112 volt compressor that is 2/3 the size of the husky.

so it's is easier to carry and store. works well too...

might be the next one to try...

cheers
