Is it necessary to balance tires if running centramatics?

I'm guessing the answer is yes

It's not necessary. Most other RV makers don't balance tires and I've never experienced any problems from the lack of balancing on those units. Tire wear was normal and never had a problem with any of them. Airstream balances the tires so they must believe it to be beneficial. I will have any new tires I buy for my current trailer balanced just because it came that way. It's not a huge expense but you can do without if you're on a budget.

Yes, a proper road force balance on each wheel will help spot a damaged wheel or a 'square' tire.

The Centramatics balance the entire rotating assembly, but it's good to have accurate starting point.

An Airstream technician told my father in 1975 that Airstream balanced the tires to smooth out the ride to prevent rivets from shearing off.

Hi, Centramatics have a limit, so balancing the tires should be done. Also one of the main reasons for Centramatics is the fact that trailer brake drums are not balanced.
