Important Tire Recall
June 26, 2007
Keep your eye on this one & and your Chinese Marathons!
I thought this was important enough to pass along!
"U.S. officials have told a small New Jersey importer to recall 450,000 radial tires for pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans after the company disclosed that its Chinese manufacturer had stopped including a safety feature that prevented the tires from separating.
Tread separation is the same defect that led to the recall of millions of Firestone tires in 2000. At the time, tire failure was linked to an increased risk of rollover of light trucks and SUV's.
The company first suspected problems in October 2005. Almost a year later, in September 2006, the Chinese manufacturer, Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber, a former state-owned company based in eastern China, acknowledged that a gum strip that prevents the tread from separating was left out of the manufacturing process.
The company, Foreign Tire Sales of Union, New Jersey, had originally sought the U.S. government's help with a recall, saying it did not have enough money to recall all the tires itself. Typically, importers are responsible for the cost of recalling defective foreign products."
"An official at Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber, reached late Monday, declined to comment. The defective tires are sold under the brand names Westlake, Compass, Telluride and YKS, Lavigne said.
Tire separation led to a much larger recall in 2000. Firestone recalled 6.5 million tires after at least 271 people were killed and hundreds more injured in accidents involving its tires coming apart.
It is not clear how many defective tires might be on the road."

I swear, between the axle recall, the fridge recall and the never ending saga on tires, it's enough to make you want to chuck RVing sometimes.

NEW 15" Tires from Nabisco
Only available in Brown Wall with white cream center line
No heavy duty double stuff model available yet, but my sources say one is in the works!
According to Nabisco NO Chinese ingredients are baked into the sidewalls.

Does anyone know if Goodyear actually MAKES the Marathons or do they just outsource them to someone else in China?

This list doesn't list Goodyear Marathons. Am I missing something? What's the problem? Does Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber also make Marathons?

It seems Goodyear has outsourced Marathon production to China. I don't know if they share the same facility with the recalled tires.

Can't be good any way you look at it. Seems every day there is something new about products made in China. Several toys recently, and now big boy toys....

OK. So all of the tire threads here of doom and gloom and I am sure worried about rolling anywhere beyond the driveway. But I just went out and looked at my Marathons and they say made in Canada. Is that a province in China?

Well, since 2004, it is entirely possible that if you bought some recently built Marathons that they could now say Made in China if in fact production had shifted there.

My Safari was made March 30, 2007 and the Marathons have the dreaded, but still very popular slogan, "Made in China" on them.

Deal with the devil

It's like Terry said.
The bigger issue is, as more and more American companies outsource production and manufacturing to increase their bottom line to China, they make a deal with the devil, sort of speak .
When it becomes all about "profit is our number one goal" the result is cheap labor, poor working conditions, environmental disasters, look the other way quality control, and a "we don't care how you do it, just do it cheaply" attitude.
For this a price has, no must be paid.
And this is the price, product failure, death and injury!
I'm sure the Chinese partly justify these shortcuts and failures on the company who outsourced the product in the first place! (well, how did you think we could produce a product for 1/20th the cost? by offering our employees 401K plans, health benefits, and 10 sick days a year. Oh, you want strict quality control and the finest materials too?) Not to mention that most of the time the decreased production cost IS NOT passed on to the consumer.
You put it out to bid, you wanted it produced as cheaply as possible, and that’s exactly what we gave you.
That IS the deal with the devil !
And guess who pays!
Oops, I fell off me soap box.
I now will return to my regular tongue and cheek self.

I also have one of Michael's works, and would encourage more of us to pursue them for their own collections. I can assure you they are NOT made in China.
