I assume the weights you have listed represent your tongue weigh, then the weight on each trailer tire. How were you able to determine the load on each tire?

If you don’t have access to wheel scales, you can use a couple passes on a CAT scale to get your weight by wheel. First pass, put one side off of the edge of the scale while splitting the tandem wheels across two scale pads. Get a weight slip, and make a second pass with the opposite side hanging off and split the tandem again on two pads (straddle the gap/line). Now you’ll have four individual weights for the four individual wheels.

Triple axles would be similar, but take extra passes to split the third axle out (unless someone has a trick).

You guys arguing about proper inflation should take a look at the load charts. The URLs are listed above, posted by AlinCal.

KK4YZ,
I appreciate the URLs you shared from AlinCal. They are very useful and a good quick reference.

They do not however address when a tire is deemed under- inflated. That is where the argument started.

I think it has been resolved? But, who knows.

Thanks,
Dan

I have two sets of four individual wheel scales. The second set had a single scale in use for the jack stand. The scales are rated for 5,000 pounds each.
The weight of one wheel was 2,042 pounds and all four wheels weighed 8,042 pounds.

With 4 scales, I can see how you get all 4 wheels of the trailer - is there a process you use to get the other 4 of your tow vehicle when connected to the trailer (with and without WD) for the traditional set of weights to adjust your rig?

And I hate to ask - but what did that set of scales set you back? Would love to have a set but honestly can't imagine the cost compared to scale tickets.

Escapees Club has locations in FL, TX, & AZ where you can weigh your trailer on these separate wheel scales. Cost a bit more than Cat scales but is much easier and more accurate.

After reading most of the tire threads, hearing all the opinions, listening to the experts, and starting a thread myself, I've concluded nobody knows.
The tire manufacturers charts conflict with the max pressure charts.
I use 65 psi because it feels right.

Harrumph!
To throw more smoke in the air, I compared the placard on a 2018 23D (actually 23CB) to our 2017 23D. The 2017 placard gave tire inflation as 65lb. The 2018 placard said 80 lbs. identical trailers. Only difference is the 2017 came with GYMs (max sidewall 65lbs) and the 2018 came with GYE’s (max sidewall pressure 80lbs).
I think they’re telling us to air up the tires to the max.
That’s easy enough.

Its just another excuse for inferior st tires failing.

I know it is always recommended to keep your pressure at the required number ? which is required in this case. The trailer spec calls for 65 pounds ? Thanks to all in advance. This Thread gets new legs every once in a while. Although the Max is 80#, it's obvious that AS recommends different pressures for different trailers. My 2018 27' Flying Cloud placard calls for 80#- the Max. I run them at 75#. All you can do is trust that AS knows what they are doing with the placards . . .

That make good sense to me. My plate says 50psi but tires in 1991 are not todays tires and althought the GYE load chart indicates that at 50psi they will carry 8600 lbs, well over my 6900 max I think I will just leave the 75 psi I have in them just for better mileage if nothing else.

Bumpy Ride @ 80 PSI

We recently went with the new Goodyear Endurance Load Range E trailer tires while doing a multi-state trip. The tires say to inflate up 80 PSI. The trailer tag says 65 PSI (which worked well for the Goodyear Marathons we ran previously). When we bought the new Endurance tires, we went with Discount Tire's recommendation to inflate to 80 PSI and continued on our way. After only a couple of hours of driving, we stopped for a bathroom break and were chagrined to find our trailer in disarray - stuff that normally stays where it is while driving was strewn all over the trailer. This was something that had never happened during the four years we were using the Goodyear Marathons. At our next opportunity, I deflated the tires to 75 PSI. Things improved with the rough ride but not much. We are still looking for the new PSI 'sweet spot.' At some point we may go back to 65 PSI but intuitively, it doesn't make sense that the tire inflation for a Load D tire and a Load E tire should be the same. We're still not sure what to do. All we know is that the ride at 80 PSI wreaks havoc inside the trailer and for us, is unacceptable. Anybody out there with a fully loaded 2014 Classic 27FB running with Goodyear Endurance tires?

Just got our "inferior" ST GYE's last Sat. First thing I noticed after un-strapping them, they are heavier by 5lbs. 👍
Next...the sidewalls are much STIFFER. 😳
All my weight on vertical unmounted tire, flex you could hardly see.
Less psi is not going to soften the ride to the same degree as with the GYM, or an LT.
After installing the new tires, I'll know better if any PSI adjustments are needed....after, my 5mi inside the AS test ride. If you haven't done it, it will enlighten. 🤓

BTY..they are 10 ply rated, not 10ply.
Letter rating has taken over.🙄

Had the GYE’s installed a few weeks ago at Discount Tire (very cooperative in lifting the trailer with my supervision) and cost ~$100 less than the local Airstream dealer for 5 tires, plus I like that there are multiple locations if I have any issues.

Just completed our annual ~1500 mile run to SW Montana yesterday and was very happy with the tires. We experienced 98 degrees in Mitchell, SD all the way down to 45 degrees late yesterday in Big Sky, MT and the tires were fine in both, just needed to adjust the cold pressures as necessary.

I had the cold pressures set at about 77 psi. Ride was good and no more shifting of stuff than we experienced with our GYMs (some of those highways between MI and MT are pretty rough).

So far, so good.

Dear Demijac
A year or so in, have you found the best inflation for your GYE's? I'm about to pull the trigger for GYE's in light of the disappearing old stock of GYM's, but I don'e want to beat up my 19 footer. Thanks.

If you actually read what GoodYear put on the tires, it does not say, "Inflate to 80 pounds".
What it does say is, "For maximum load inflate to 80 pounds."

I don't have anywhere near maximum load according to the GY tire inflation chart. Which, BTW is exactly the same as the GY chart for the inferior Marathons.

I set cold at 65 psi. Under way it goes to 73 or 74.
I may try slight less and see if I have fewer items inside on the floor.

Even if they were still available you don’t want the Marathons. The Endurance is heavier and stiffer and it seems like they’re working out.
You’ll have to experiment with what works for you. The best pressure in my opinion is the highest that your rig will take without throwing everything around and popping too many rivets....and stay above the recommended pressure from the load charts...and, of course, below the 80 psi max.

After reading this, the thing telling thing to me is that Airstream seems to recommend the maximum (80psi) on the GY Endurance regardless of any other factor other than it is the maximum that Goodyear recommends. It just doesn't make any sense to me that the psi a 27 footer should be the exact same as a 23 footer even though the loads are 1,000 pounds different. I am about to leave on my first big trip (2,500 miles). I think I'm going to try 72 or 74 cold and see how that does.

FYI. We use(d) 44 psi in the 15" Michelin LTX (P) 235/75R15 XL tires on both the 2013 25FB International Serenity (6,900 pounds loaded) and the current 2015 23D International Serenity (6,063 pounds fully loaded). Andy Thompson at CanAm in London, Ontario, Canada has put this tire on thousands of Airstreams at this pressure.

Much less stuff thrown around inside the trailer and no rivets piping out.

We run 75 psi in the 16" Michelin LT225/75R16/E LTX M/S2 tires as the 2013 Classic scales 9,200 pounds.
