Firestone Transforce HT2

It's time to get new tires. The local dealer is suggesting the Firestone over the Michelin Agilis or RIBS. They said they have had good luck with them, price point is significantly lower than the Michelins. Has anyone had experience with these Firestones? Thanks in advance for any help.

For a truck or your AS trailer?

I wouldn't buy them at all for either application, but I have not had them on the AS or any other trailer. They came OEM on my truck (the AT and not the HT2) and they were awful. Bad traction, wore very quickly and they were loud to boot. Check out the reviews for both on tirerack.com - they are not very good generally.

I went with the Michelin Agilis setup for my truck and they have been outstanding. I will put them on my AS as well.

I got rid if my Firestone Transforce AT’s at 16K miles

Trekbiker, go to TireRack.com and check out the user ratings on the Firestone’s vs. the Michelin Agilis Cross Climates. Our RAM 2500 came with Transforce AT’s and I found the wet and snow traction to be terrible. I couldn’t pull away from a stop sign without spinning the tires. Dry traction was fine.

We had a big trip planned and I didn’t want to risk an accident with the trailer so I replaced them with Michelin Agilis Cross Climates at Discount Tire. At 16K miles the Firestones were down to half the original tread depth.

NOTE: If you’re a WBCCI member, there’s a Michelin discount program.

It’s been a year since we got the Michelin’s and the wet and winter performance was day and night different than the Firestones. Also, the ride is smoother and quieter now.

If your budget can afford it I’d recommend going with the Agilis tires.

I have the factory Michelin LTX on now but they are not available in my size. I was going to do the Agilis but read a number of reviews that said treadwear was lousy - about 24,000 miles. Then thought I would do the RIBS as they had better treadwear - they are pricey.

Thanks for the input do far.

Does Michelin sell the LTX anymore? I thought I had heard they stopped making it.

How much is the discount, how does it work and what retailers accept it or is it a rebate after the fact?

Thanks!

The program is run by Michelin and the steps are a little involved. Log into your WBCCI Member portal and look for Member Benefits, Michelin Advantage Program.

I decided to go with the Michelin XPS Ribs. Kind of expensive, but based on some reviews much better tread life than the Agilis. We leave Sunday for a 2 - 3 week trip from Missouri to Minnesota. Will report back on how that went. Driving home from tire dealer pulling seemed to be as good if not better than with the LTX M/S2 tires that were replaced.

I tow my AS with a Ram 2500. First thing I did was to trash those Firestone tires. I personally do not trust Firestone. They have many controversies in their past. In the late 70's congress found that they knowingly sold defective tires. Then in the late 90s there was a huge scandal regarding rollover accidents involving Firestone tires. These and other incidents gives me zero confidence in their products. I will pay more for safety rather than spend less and take a chance. But each person has to decide for themselves. Good Luck!

Trekbiker,
All of our fleet trucks at work run Firestone tires without issue. My last set of tires on my personal truck were Firestone Transforce AT tires. I liked them a lot until they tread was less than 50% then the traction was not good. For me they were a good reliable tire and quiet on the highway. I would not have any trouble putting the Firestone Transforce HT's on a trailer. The Firestones will be priced cheaper than any Michelin tire. My personal opinion is the Michelin Rib is probably the best commercial rated tire that you could put on a trailer. That being said often times dealers push a brand of tire on you that you may not want. Do some research and pick the tire that you want.

We just returned from our trip to MN. Only pulled a little over 1400 miles with the new XPS RIB tires so not a real workout yet. However, they pulled fine, we had no problems at all.

Likewise. Firestone on all trucks 4500/5500 and down. Transformers in question. No issues. Good cost structure per mile.

All Goodyear on our class 8 trucks. Great value, great commercial service network. Same for Firestone.
