If the roads are so bad that I need to put on chains, I am not driving.

X2 and that's even without the Airstream in tow.

100% agree. That is one of the benefits of having your own bed, kitchen, and bathroom with you at all times. Much safer to stop and wait out the bad weather. Also avoids getting salt all over the trailer.

I carry chains for the trailer as well as the truck. I want to safely decend below snow levels if caught by weather. I camp all year round and I'm currently waiting for a window of good weather before I go out again!

You had me scratching my head on the need for chains, especially being in FL. Thanks for clarifying!

OP had my interest for a minute. We got dumped on here, and we had planned on departing for Jekyll Island on Sunday.
Looking at an alternate plan.

Snow chains required...
For those of us who live out west and regularly have to travel over mountain passes...
Most state DOT require you to carry chains to fit your tow vehicle and your trailer if you are going over any mountain passes during certain seasons. This is a requirement even if the pavement is bare and dry at the time. And yes, they do ask to see them if you have been stopped for any reason.

Chains?
I thought chains were necessary for traction of drive wheels and steering, neither of which a trailer does. But what do i know.......
Good luck and have fun!

What chains?
Hi, what can I say?????? I have had way too many miles towing my 25' Airstream with my two wheel drive Lincoln Navigator in snow and on ice. This has been done in Northern California, Oregon, Wyoming, and South Dakota. Oh and I didn't have chains either.
Did I get stuck? No.
Did I slide off of the road? No.
Did anyone, or anything, get hurt or damaged? No.
Was it a good idea? No.
Would I do it again? No.

I can’t imagine a good reason to use chains on a travel trailer.
But I live FL. Maybe I don’t get it.
I guess I’ll avoid deep snow like they get in Pensacola and Virginia Beach.

IMO
If there is enough snow on the pavement that chains are recommended, I have no business towing a travel trailer in that stuff.
You may be different.
