What is that thing?

My 63 Safari has a very substantial U shaped bracket clamped to the Axel behind the wheel on the curb side. It is very close to the ground, several inches. What could it be? My only thought is a hurricane tie down. Thanks

Typically that is a 'tire saver' designed to skid along the ground and hold the wheel up if a tire goes flat.

Usually installed in pairs on both ends of the axle.

Not typically found on newer models. If you only have one, I'd suggest removing and discarding it...

Thanks,
That makes sense. Mine is not spring steel but a full U starting and ending at the axel and a full quarter inch ,at least, thick. Bolted with a heavy clamp over the axle. If it caught on something it would definitely take the axel with it.

Our '67 Safari had these skids. When I ordered the new axle from Andy I asked him whether to remove or retain. He advised that if in decent shape to retain. Attached are pics with the original axle and new. I found the u-bolts loose so got new u-bolts long enough to have 2 nuts on each leg, one being a lock nut.
(Pic of new is before replacing tires.)

If that is indeed the purpose of them, I think that it is an excellent device.
It would only be useful tho, on a single axle.

It is a great idea, but in the case of the OP, he only has one of them installed on his AS. I guess one went missing.

I could also see that it could be useful on a dual axle unit if, god forbid, you hit something that took out both tires on one side...
