Urgent - Need dexter axle for 88 Airstream Excella 29ft

Had a bearing failure in Oregon on the way to see the Spruce Goose - spindle, shoes and drum was damaged - was able to replace bearings, running without brakes, was able to get a new nut back on damaged threads. Trying to limp back to Colorado. Have two extra set of bearings and will check every hundred miles or so. we have about 1200 to go. Would love to replace along the way. Need 3500 lbs 42 spindle 12 inch drum and bk3-100 bearing set with 32degree bracket for shocks. reached out to VARR as there seems be be a few along to route back...waiting to hear back

It would be best to get the axle replaced. Something else to consider if the axle is not worn out is to just replace the spindle. Thees emergency repairs are done everyday along the side of the road.

My friend works for a company that does this work it is called Axle Surgeons. There are other companies who do this type of work.

thanks for your recommendation. I called with no reply. Limping home. Now that InlandRv is not an option - where do members recommend a Drexler axle purchase? thanks for any assistance

There are trailer shops all over that order Dexter parts.
Find one that has done this before. It is a process that requires exact measurements to get it right.
There will be a number of options or choices as well.
If still there, the axle will have a tag attached. That tag will have information that will be useful.

Assuming you are replacing and not repairing the axle and considering your trailer is getting close to 40 years of age, you might replace all axles.

If replacing one axle match to what is there.
If replacing all axles, consider increasing by a small amount the load capacity and down angle

I would concur that if your axles are the originals then it is time to install some new ones. I would use the Dexter #11 axles with 12" brakes. If you go with the original down angle of 22 degrees then you may consider putting on the 3" lift kit. Make sure it comes with shock brackets. You can also get a 32 degree down angle (with no lift kit) which will give you more ground clearance. The VIN tag will give you the axle weight rating. You can increase by 10%. If I recall the Dexter #11 axle can vary from 4000 to 5200 lbs. Spec the axle to the weight rating needed.

If your mechanically inclined you can do this yourself otherwise you will need to find a shop that can do the work. I have changed axles on 5 Airstream trailers.

You can order them through a local Dexter Axle dealership.

thanks for the replies and information. as these are fairly new axles - 6 year - i am just planning to replace the failed one. I'll look for the tag - but the last order info indicates: Bare Beam Only 3500# Rating #11 tube 42 Spindle HP Airstream Brackets 32* Down Angle - with a 12" Hub/Drum Bearing Kit BK3-100 and Airstream Axle Shock Bracket Kit. Sounds like this information is all I need...? I'll start contacting the suggested places and see if we can salvage some of the season for a later trip understanding that the delivery can be up to 2 months. Thanks Again Forum.

Almost back home in Colorado. Repacking every 250miles. I ordered the axle from HighSkyRVParts in Colorado. Will install once the axle is ready. Seems like a company that have most of the USA covered. Thanks again forum for all the help. Drive Safe and see ya on the road.
