I can't find any new cotter pins in my bag'o'goodies that I got today. I read there are non-cotter-pin things these days. Do I have a non cotter pin set up? If so, will the cotter pins from the old axles that I installed in the new ones hurt anything?

And what the heck is this thing?


There are four of that thing, so I figure it must stay on rather than be an installation tool. I don't see it at all in the manual that came with the axle set or in the airstream service guide. It fits over the outermost part of the drum but the dust cap does not fit into it (at least not that I can figure out).

It is a grease seal which goes on the back of the drum. The closed side goes toward the center of the trailer.

Yep y'all were right.




Lifting the axles was really easy.

And man that red grease makes a mess!

The axles brakes and drums are installed and I have two tires on the ground on the road side. The curb side is still on stands. I want the tires off for installing the new wheel well tomorrow evening after work.

Thank goodness for going back to the office tomorrow. I need a rest!

I just wanted to ask ya,DID ya get as much grease on U as the bearings???
If so, YA DID GOOD.

Because many of us are old and decrepit, and get winded if we type too fast...(pant, pant)... much less lift a 150 or so pound axle.

I have only to install the curb side wheels remaining, but that is waiting until I do the outside wheel well this evening.

Overlander63, my axles weren't 150 pounds. The brakes/drums were shipped uninstalled at my request to make my job easier (longer, but easier IMO). The old axle sets were way too heavy to want to deal with, so I wanted to divide & conquer the new axle sets. I am guessing they were 70ish pound each.

Henschen bare axles for Airstream's weigh 120 pounds.

Henschen complete axles for Airstream's weigh 220 pounds.

When the axle rating becomes 4000 pounds or more, then add 25 to 30 pounds to the above numbers.
