Replace Wheel Bearings?

The first hub I pulled, had what appeared to be broken down grease inside of it. The grease was very dirty, and it's viscocity was that of a thick, sludgey motor oil. The bearings and races look fine, no scoring, but seem to have horizontal play. I think I will go up to NAPA with the old bearings and compare to new ones before I decide.

Replacement now for a few dollars is cheap insurance.

And you already have it apart. Its a whole lot easier to do it now than on the shoulder of a road in the middle of summer. Then you know exactly how old they are.

And don't forget to change the seal, even if you don't replace the bearings. You might also have the drums turned while you have them off.

And if NAPA does not have the right size, any good utility trailer parts center will have them.

I opted not to replace my bearings, after placing them side by side with a new set at the parts store. I could not tell any difference in the appearance, or play between the two. Parts man concured with my decision. Call me crazy if you want to!

Smiley, I get those numbers to you tonight! I wrote them down in the shop.
