New axle

Hello,

Im planning on ordering a new hub and axle assembly from colin hyde for my 1959 trade-wind and having it installed locally.

Can anyone in the washington dc or Fredericksburg area recommend a good garage or shop to have this work done on a vintage airstream?

Hey Steve. There is a member in the Baltimore area that does classic AS work. Seek and ye shall find. From what I read here it is not a bad do it yourself job either if you have space to work and time.

Okay 62overlander time for you to appear! Doing it yourself is not hard and you can do it in a couple of hours! Good choice on airstream love that year!

Replacing a spring-type axle on a 1959 model with a torsion axle is more than a couple hours' work. The old axle and springs will have to be removed, a mount for the new axle fabbed and welded in place, then the new axle can be installed.

Steve,

Why do you want to do away with the spring suspension?

Where did he mention anything about a torsion axle? Spring axle swap is simple if using factory setup. Couple hours max.

Not sure Colin sells leaf axles.

back to the question - "Why do you want to do away with the spring suspension? "
One can assume the "springs" are no longer doing the job. If that is the reason, I would suggest a new set of leaf springs. As suggested above going to a trailer shop (and yes shop around) to get a new set of leaves installed.
