Major help needed , wheels seized while driving!!

Hi guys

62 globetrotter had a heart attack today lol. I don't know where to start.
Was towing it... Started to hear grinding... Obviously thinking bearings right away.
Then I heard what sounded like a bar drop on the ground (nothing dropped on the ground, just what it sounded like)
My wheels locked up, had
To get it on dollies and tow it back to the place. I haven't gotten into it yet, but when I jacked it up, something is seriously wrong... As I'm jacking it, inside the big hub, that sound keeps coming as it's going up, sounding like a bar dropping on the floor.

Can someone tell me about these axles? Obviously that hub needs to come off...is it just those rusty 4 bolts that hold the cover on? I'm guessing needing a nice sledge to break it as there's a lot of rust on there.

Any and I mean ANY help would be great. The tires will not soon at all in either direction.

Wheels plural?

Or one wheel?

If plural, it is almost certain that your brakes locked. (Breakaway switch?)

It would be extraordinary odds for two wheels to fail at the same time.

The magnets clanking on the drum surface can make a clang of sorts, but not something you would hear from the drivers seat.

I jacked up the one side that I know was really messing up, and she's locked.... Haven't jacked up the other side yet....

Isn't the leaf spring style it's got the dura torque, I think it's the first year??

What would you start with? Take off the big hub cover and have a peak? Is there any tension type stuff in there to be aware of? I haven't opened up the axle housing on her before. Any ideas where to start? Got too dark out, will give her all day tomorrow.

You must pull the hub.. place a big pan underneath to catch all the junk that falls out.

No way to 'know' but sounds to me like either a 'brake' locked up or came loose inside the brake drum.... but, as you pull off the hub I bet you will find the bearings loose and dropping into the pan you thoughtfully placed underneath.

As J Morgan said check the breakaway first.
Jack it up and start removing the hubs. You may have to back off the brake shoes to remove the hub. Also watch to see how much the axle drops when jacking.

Sounding like a job I haven't tackled before

In good with tools. Anybody have a link on these old assemblies and how they are put together?

I'm guessing needing to pack new bearings. Just not sure how to check these brakes etc. would like to read up on them to understand them a bit.

Sounds like long past new axle time. I used Colin Hyde in New York for my new Bambi II axle.

As far as the breakaway switch goes, I don't have a controller. Just pulled it with my big truck.... No electric breakers or controller. Is that what's being referred to?

The breakaway switch is a totally different thing. It sets the brakes if the hitch fails. Jim

Colin can send you a new axel assembly anywhere. You will get brakes, bearings, drums and new axle for less trouble then trying to fix what's wrong with yours.

Ok! Got the cotter pin and castle but off, but how does this drum come off?
I'm guessing those three nuts that are completely rusted to the bolts??!? Grrrrr...

Plus after I got the nut off the bearings won't come out, jammed in solid. In my experience shouldn't they be able to slide out??

If anybody can help here would be awesome I'm sure everybody on here but me has taken these apart

K gave her some encouraging words and she came off. And here it is.

Those springs just fell out when she came loose. I obviously need some new parts in there, any part numbers floating around here? I'm in Canada ... Napa etc.

Now is anything jumping out to you why my wheels would lock up?? I'm fairly new with this type of setup but I'm good with tools so shoot away. Im going to clean and repack bearings but they look fine and in tact.

I don't have a controller in my tv so I've never used the electric brakes. I've only towed her a few times... But something def went wrong... Loud consistent metal grinding, followed by a ping and pops

With that lower return spring disconnected, the shoes are free to contact the drum surface. When that occurs, the rear (trailing) shoe can and will "suck" into the drum and self-apply.

Appears everything else, although in need of service, is in reasonably good shape.

After removing that nut it should slide off sometimes it needs a few bangs with a dead blow hammer or the brake shoes need to be loosened to release it. You can also use a screw driver to gently pry out the outer bearing and washer then it it should wiggle back and forth some as your pulling it off.From the looks of that grease it looks like it's been a while since they were last packed. Dexter axle has a good video on repacking bearings on there web page. But as another said you may be well beyond that with those axles. Good luck Rand

Inland RV center has the parts you need. Check at an axle speciality place near you that's where I found the parts I needed just last week. Rand

You can get a complete brake set that just bolts right on five bolts and two wires.
