Where did you hear that?

I watched our front axle being lifted while balanced on a large floor jack at the JC Service Center.

Earlier comment in this thread on dimples: "...My guess is that it was a jack used to jack the axle up in place for mounting. Those suckers are heavy..." I know nothing about the science of axles other than my #11s arrived with bends / dimples and I put them on. I was able to lift one end without difficulty, and see many photos of them being moved around shops with a jack in the centre.

You are spot on...
This was 'before' they were installed, they are still on the delivery pallet.
