And they don't go down the highway at 65 mph which increases heat.

You know, I was looking through this booklet thing that Andy sent along with our new axles and hubs. It's got a diagram of a different hub assembly that includes a zerk. Apparently, you just connect on with the grease gun and pump the thing full. (That'd be a lot easier than the "method" I use.)

Gene,

You are correct, farm implements don't see much speed. But boat trailers with grease zerks in the dust caps do.

Godspeed,
Trent

The new axle I put on our Caravel six years ago has a zerk fitting in the center of the spindle that lets grease exit the spindle between the inner and outer bearings. The idea is to pump grease until it comes out the outer bearing. The seal is supposed to keep the grease from exiting the back of the hub and getting on the brake lining. Doesn't work so well. The grease that has been running in the bearings seems to break down, and when the new grease is pumped through the bearings, it forces the old grease out. Some of the old grease went past the seals.

I now use the "old way" of packing the bearings on the Caravel.

My new axle on my GT has the grease zerk fittings, they will be pumped full.they have a relief on the outside ,so as not to blow the seals. Dave
PS I think seals should not be left in there for 6 years.

Firstly I am glad some of you know the difference between Breaks and brakes...

If you still have a hot hub, it could be the chase is not true. sometimes the tooling slips and it occurs. Fortunately for you, you bought the super deluxe brand and the seller will make sure it is right in the end.

The seals were not left in for six years. They were replaced when I found the problem, and get replaced every time I pack the bearings.

Glad to hear it. Do you have one of those laser temperature things? You can check tires and hub heat when you stop to catch problems before they get dangerous. I think they run around $50 and I got mine through Amazon.

This thread was giving me all sorts of stomachaches, so this morning when I finished installing our new axles and brakes, I took a short ride, felt the hubs, took a longer ride, and felt the hubs. Nice and cool!

COOL.

Failures can happen to most anything.

Even one in a million, is a failure rate.

Diamonds break, too.

Glad you can now sleep good.

Oh, I'm going to sleep VERY soundly! My body just can't take too much physical exertion any more (though that may have to do with my being too much a fan of Sonic hamburgers).

BTW, I had to raise the hitch once all was said and done. It's now 2.5 inches higher; we'll see how that fits with the rig once I'm feeling more fit.

Lynn.

That's about the average new ball height after new axles are installed, and of course the ball mount must be corrected.
