I am trying to educate myself on the wonderful world of torsion axels. I have built off road vehicles, I have broken leafs, bent leaf hangers, replaced leafs, and pretty much understand how leafs interact with shocks. Cannot say I completely understand the interplay of any suspension system, but at least I have seen a leaf spring before!

1963 Bambi is forcing me to try and understand torsion axels. ( rolled out of the factory with approx 1,800 lb dry weight at the axel). My understanding is that the original axel was a little inadequate, and though there is considerable debate, most replace the axel with a 3,500. Some of the Monday morning criticism over 3,500 axel is an overly rough ride.
Apparently each torsion axel, (with frame mounts) is pretty much a custom order in this neck of the woods. Can an axel & spindel rated to 3,500 lbs be ordered with rubber innardes for a lighter trailer?
How does one match an appropriate shock, for 3,500 torsion springs, under 1/2 the load? A shock will not soften stiff springs, but on the other hand it will do very little if the springs do not flex.
